Assessment within the Fellowship is intended to support learning and professional development rather than simply provide evidence of completion. Throughout the Fellowship, supervisors are encouraged to use assessment as an opportunity for discussion, reflection and constructive feedback, helping fellows progressively develop the knowledge, skills and professional judgement required to practise supportive oncology.
Evidence collected during the Fellowship should demonstrate the breadth of the fellow's experience and their developing capability across the curriculum, recognising that fellows will begin the programme with differing backgrounds and levels of expertise.
The Fellowship adopts a developmental approach to assessment. Individual pieces of evidence should not be viewed in isolation or as pass/fail exercises, but rather as part of an overall picture of the fellow's progress throughout the year.
Meaningful feedback is often more valuable than the assessment itself. Supervisors are encouraged to focus on reflective discussion, clinical reasoning and future development, helping fellows identify both strengths and opportunities for continued learning.
Progress is demonstrated through a range of complementary evidence collected throughout the Fellowship. Together these provide a holistic picture of the fellow's development rather than relying on any single assessment method.
Evidence includes workplace-based assessments, a logbook of clinical experience, reflective practice, quality improvement or research activity, and the Educational Supervisor's overall judgement of progress.
No single assessment determines successful completion of the Fellowship. Instead, supervisors should consider the overall pattern of evidence, the breadth of clinical experience, engagement with learning opportunities, and the fellow's developing capability across the curriculum.
The aim is to determine whether the fellow has demonstrated the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours expected of a clinician completing the Fellowship in Supportive Oncology.
